But some of the more interesting comments made to me have been about the fact that I live in China. So I present to you...
STUFF AMERICANS SAY WHEN YOU TELL THEM YOU LIVE IN CHINA
"Oh, that must be....interesting." This comment is always accompanied by a dramatic pause, followed by a horrible look of disgust.
"Are you in the service?" Let's think about this for a moment. China is a communist country. Do you really think the US is allowed to have our military here?
"But you don't look Chinese." That's because I'm not.
"Oh, I've always wanted to visit Tokyo." Wrong country but thanks for your enthusiasm.
"How come your English is so good?" Really?
"How come your English is so good?" Really?
But for all the odd comments I've gotten I also get my fair share of "Wow, that must be exciting!" and "I've always wanted to live abroad". So the next time someone mentions where they live, ask them about it. Or at least try not to wrinkle your nose.
If it's any consolation I get the same when I go back to Australia.
ReplyDeleteI get the big question "So what's China like?" - how long have you got? I told someone I lived in Shanghai and she asked if that was in Hong Kong. And when I go home everyone wants to take me to the best new dumpling place in town and all I'm craving is a cheese plate and red wine!!!
Rant over.
Nancy, too funny! People always offer to take me out for Chinese too. And while I love American Chinese too all I want is a turkey sandwich and some decent pizza!
DeleteI always get "Aren't you scared?" Or "You're so brave!"
ReplyDeleteI think it is pretty brave to move to a country so unlike what you have known. I wish more people made that comment to me =)
DeleteThe most frequent question I've gotten is, "Do you think China is going to take over the world/America?" Really?? lol, No...no, I don't.
ReplyDeleteI've had people say that to me as well. My response is usually, "You've clearly never been there".
